An electromagnetic pulse is created every time nuclear explosions happen. If the explosion happens near ground level, the earth soaks up the brunt of it. However, the higher in the atmosphere they happen, the more dreadful the damage. That damage consists of destruction of all electronic devices as well as a complete downfall of the electrical grid across the country. In short, electricity would be a thing of the past and completely unrestoreable.
One of the greatest problems we would face in such a situation is that we would be unable to generate any form of power and there would be no ability to communicate via radio. Both of these situations would be dire in such emergency circumstances, which is why having some EMP protection in your gear is essential.
It is also important to note that, unlike a lot of other emergency scenarios, the electromagnetic pulse is instantaneous. There is no prepping for it, and you cannot finish prepping for it once it has happened.
If you do not have and EMP shielding in place at the moment of EMP, there will be no need for it at all because it will be too late. Of course, this just illustrated the importance of having some kind of electromagnetic pulse protection in place before anything happens. That is the entire point of prepping.
So, if you are looking to prep your bug out bag for when SHTF, know how to protect against EMP is essential, and it starts with an EMP proof box, bag, or cage.
Also, on a lower scale, more everyday scale, thieves can also attempt to use “signal amplification attacks” to gain access to your vehicle that is normally locked via key fob. These types of attacks are on the increase in today’s digital age, and they can be curtailed with electromagnetic pulse shielding.
Here are our Top Picks
FobGuard Faraday Cage EMP Review
The FobGuard Faraday Cage EMP is a protection device for car keyless entry fobs that thwarts efforts by thieves to gain entry into your vehicle in your absence. They use “signal amplification attacks” as a means to gain unauthorized entry into your vehicle by amplifying the signal of your key fob and using it to unlock the car.
Even with the rolling codes that are used for many key fobs and garage door openers these days, thieves can still use an extender to trigger to your fob which will offer up the next code with ease.
The FobGuard will give you total peace of mind in knowing that your car and all its contents are safe from those thieves. As well as protecting your key fob, you can also use it to protect your credit cards as well, from RFID devices.
In the case of the FobGuard, be aware of fakes! A true FobGuard is handmade in the USA, out of expensive materials and costs about thirty dollars. Made from high quality, RoHS compliant, military specification attenuation materials, with several layers of 90db shielding, it is the real thing. Cheaper versions do not provide nearly the protection of the original FobGuard

- Dimensions: 5.1 x 3.3 x 0.2 inches
Black Hole Faraday Bag Review
The Black Hole Faraday Cage Bag is an EMP bag that is a bit larger than the FobGuard and encompasses all aspects of signal blocking, anti-spying, anti-tracking and radiation protection for key fobs, cell phones, credit cards and more. It is specifically designed for personal protection, digital forensics and military applications.
Made in the USA, this faraday shield is constructed with the highest quality material and has some of the best signal shielding ability in the industry. Radio frequency shielding specs are 68 dB – 82 dB from low MHz to high GHz.
This bag works to protect again EMP in two ways in that nothing comes in nor does anything come out, thus providing a double layer of protection and is made from water resistant, wear-resistant canvas that will last you for years.
- Weight: 3.52
- Dimensions: 8.75 x 8.75 x 0.25 inches
Faraday Cage EMP ESD Bags, 10-piece Kit Review
Next, we have the Faraday Cage EMP ESD Bags, 10-piece Kit. This kit contains 10 bags: two that measure 15 x 18 inches, four that measure 8 x 11 inches, and four that measure 5 x 7 inches.
This creates a full nesting kit that will accommodate and protect a variety of electronic devices including cell phones, laptops, tablets and hard drives.
With five layers of high-grade aluminized anti-static shielded protection, your devices will be guarded from charges inside and out. They are also equipped with a very strong zip-lock enclosure for extra safety and to hold your valuables safely inside.
If you choose to seal these bags with electronics inside for long-term use, it is advised that you add a silica gel pack before sealing, to protect against moisture.
While these bags provide great shielding capabilities, they are not made to, nor are they intended for, blocking cell phone transmissions. Transmissions from WiFi and cell phones are also not good measures to use to determine the validity of these bags.
- Weight: 5 ounces
- Dimensions: 18 x 3 x 3 inches (whole package)
Black Hole Faraday Duffel Bag Review
The Black Hole Faraday Duffel Bag is a little larger still, providing spacious and ample room to protect several different devices all at the same time. There is even enough room in this bag to put your devices into a smaller Faraday bag and then put that in the Black Hole Bag, for extra protection. This bag alone shields radio frequencies from 62 – 67 dB. It has the highest RF isolation available today.
This entire line was designed to aide military and law enforcement in the collection, and transport of many different types of wireless devices that might have evidence that absolutely cannot be compromised. If they can trust it to protect from EMP, you know that you can certainly trust it for yours. The bag is made from wear-resistant, lightweight, durable ballistics fabric that is made in the USA.
Another great feature with this EMP shield are the carry handles. There are handles on the top over the opening as well as a handy shoulder strap, so no matter how you need to handle it, it’s a complete grab and go system. You can leave all your devices in this bag and when and if something happens, simply grab it and you’re off.

Ska Direct Cell Phone Privacy Protection Bag Review
The Ska Direct Cell Phone Privacy Protection Bag can be used for so much more than protection from EMP. This wallet-sized bag is made from only the highest quality materials and serves three major functions.
First, it is anti-radiation which means it will protect against the radiation produced by cell phones.
Second, it is anti-degaussing which means it can protect ID cards, credit cards and other magnetic-strip type cards against magnetism loss and information stealing.
Third, it is anti-signal which means you can put cell phones in the bag and they will not be traceable nor will it be able to receive calls. Callers will receive a message that states, “Calls cannot be connected”.
The bag is compatible with virtually all phone types in all popular sizes, including the iPhone and Samsung varieties. It also blocks WiFi and Bluetooth signals with complete network isolation.
- Weight: 0.3 ounces
- Dimensions: 4.7 x 2 x 0.4 inches
My Vote for Best EMP Protection Device
My favorite of these five bags is the Black Hole duffel bag, primarily because of its size. Even though it costs quite a bit more money than the other bags, the fact that it provides ample room for shielding more than one device makes it very handy, especially if you have multiple items.
There may not be time to bag each device separately, so being able to put everything into this one duffle and accomplish the same purpose is a definite win.
I also like the fact that it has a shoulder strap, which makes grabbing it in a hurry quite easy. You can use the shoulder strap over one shoulder or you can put it over your head for across the body wear, making it more secure.
